The holidays are coming up quickly this year and it’s time to start planning how you’ll stick with your health goals! This doesn’t mean you have to skip all of your favorite foods, but that you can set realistic goals to feel good and eat well. These five tips are a great start to make your health a priority during the holiday season.
One treat per day
Ok listen, this doesn’t mean a whole pie. Allowing yourself to have a portion of something you enjoy daily helps to reduce an all-or-nothing mindset. This is helpful since it can eliminate any single occasions of majorly overeating. When we overeat, this can lead to sluggishness, weight gain, and digestive issues. When we allow the proper portion of something we enjoy daily, we are more likely to make healthier choices and avoid losing control.
Addition not Subtraction
When we prioritize what we will ADD to our meals instead of what to restrict, we can make strides in healthier eating. This can look like adding an additional serving of vegetables, adding in oats for breakfast, or adding in protein at all of our meals. This helps to avoid black or white thinking around eating no sugar, sweets, carbs, etc. instead of thinking about skipping dessert, add some berries and whipped cream to a smaller slice of pie.
Balance Your Meals
Now you don’t need to make chicken, rice, and broccoli for thanksgiving. But you CAN have a serving of turkey, mashed potato, cranberry sauce, and a large servings of veggies. Adding in adequate veggies and protein will help you feel your best while still enjoying the foods you love.
Prioritize Movement
Moving your body is a great way to stay on your goals and add some fun experiences to the season. Whether that is backyard football or hitting the gym, breaking a sweat will help you to feel great during a cozy season.
Eat Breakfast Daily
I know what you’re thinking, that you should fast before a big meal? It is much better for our physical and mental health as well as our metabolism to eat consistently. Making a goal to have a nutritious breakfast every day can help prevent overeating, irritable mood, and digestive issues. Try something seasonal like pumpkin pie overnight oats! Make your breakfast routine last throughout the holiday season and you’ll feel a lot better for it.
