It’s getting warmer out there and we may be tempted to overhaul our entire lifestyle overnight. This is your reminder that lasting healthy habits take small, sustainable change.
This is especially true for those of us who are looking to improve their health in there 40s, 50s, 60s+. With health and wellness, we must meet ourselves where we currently are. So much of the readily available information online might make you feel like you need to make the same changes as someone who is 25.
There is no benefit of giving yourself unrealistic expectations. You can achieve all of your goals, but need to do so in a way catered to you.
Instead of putting on the pressure to live a perfect lifestyle by tomorrow, here are three small things you can do instead.
One: Get Outside For a Walk Daily
This doesn’t need to be a long walk. Implementing a habit of moving your body while getting some time outside will greatly benefit your physical and mental health. As this starts to become a constant in your routine, it will feel challenging to go without it! Wake up a few minutes earlier to get outside, or take 15 minutes on your lunch break to get some air. Increasing your step count and time time outdoors is a great first step.
Two: Eat A Vegetable Daily
At least one. Preferably more, but keeping the goal achievable will make this more likely to become a habit. Try putting peppers and onions in your eggs, or add a handful of arugula to your turkey sandwich. We want you to feel empowered on your fitness journey, not overwhelmed. In time, aim for 5 servings of vegetables daily. For now, focus on where you can start to add a few in.
Three: Limit Sugar To Once Per Day
We tend to overdo sugary drinks, desserts, and sweet snacks. Instead of telling yourself to cut out all of it, how about you allow one treat daily. This makes a healthy lifestyle less intimidating. The goal is not to create a miserably restrictive lifestyle, but a responsible one that honors your wellbeing. Choose the things you enjoy the most, and let yourself enjoy them. Then, skip the caramel in your coffee or mindless chocolate after lunch.
If you stick with these three simple tips then you will start to feel more energized and empowered in your fitness journey. Let’s not stop here! Schedule a free call to develop your custom plan to build a balanced diet and consistent fitness routine.
